Bio (by Eric Carrillo)
Eric Carrillo, 16, is a junior at HAAT (the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology) in East Los Angeles. He has taken 4 years of art classes and one semester of a Digital Imaging class. His teacher, Ms. Dooley encouraged Eric to enter the ‘Spotlight’ contest. He never really thought of being a photographer because of the influence in his neighborhood; He is just trying to finish high school. Now that many have recognized him, he has a new desire to pursue a career in photography. Many of his peers applaud him. Although he does not have all the money he needs for his equipment, with the help of Ms. Dooley he manages to make his ideas visible. He also wishes to become a social worker or probation officer so that he may make a difference in his community by helping others that were once like him. Eric wasn’t the best student or the best child to his parents; he has gotten in many conflicts with the authorities and with himself. Now he has made a difference, he got his act together and made many changes to his lifestyle. Although it has not been the best he wishes for it to become better by having the opportunity to attend college and do something with his life. He wishes to attend Idaho State University, a Military School, or Art Center College of Design.
Way to go, Eric, for honoring HAAT with being chosen as a Spotlight semifinalist!
Please wish Eric all best luck as he prepares for his interview and portfolio review with six Spotlight photography judges Saturday, February 19th. That interview and portfolio are part of their consideration for choosing the two photography finalists.
Only 12-15 semifinalists are chosen from a large group of applicants from private and public high schools. Click here for a sample of schools who typically make it into this exclusive group.
More than 1,000 students apply in photography alone from a VERY large region of southern California including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Diego!
The Spotlight 2010 grand prize winner was Mrs. Dooley's student, Benito Rojas, also from East Los Angeles. Two other students of Mrs. Dooley were Spotlight semi-finalists: Aaron Alvarado in 2010 and Alfredo Gomez in 2008.
