The Surreal Selfie - Collaborative Book and Tumblr Page with Harvard Westlake
This collaboration was organized by Joe Medina, photography teacher at Harvard Westlake. It culminated in the publication of a beautifully designed hardcover book. Link to HW's Art Department.
"Sketchbook /Smartphone Challenge 2 : The Self Portrait “ What is a self-portrait? Unlike a snapshot, it tells something about the subject. “ Inspired by: Vivian Maier, Lee Friedlander, Francesca Woodman, Frida Kahlo, Duane Michaels, Albert Chong, Alex Stoddard and Phillip Schumacher."
"This photo challenge points at something deeper, to use the language of photography and dreams to reveal more about yourself, to show, as the name implies , something about your life, dreams, culture, and community using yourself as the main subject." HW asked for "creative, thoughtful, and interesting self-portraits .The photos should be honest and speak from the heart. You should convey your ideas with feeling, with spirit, with passion, with soul. The project encourages students to respond to artistic challenges that will push their creative and technical boundaries and share their work with a larger audience via Instagram and tumbler."
HW PHOTO-ONE MOMENT -ONE MEAL -ONE PHOTOGRAPH
This smart phone project about photographing meals was HAAT's first collaboration of the school year with Harvard Westlake's photography program.
Nothing makes us feel connected quite like sharing a meal together. On September 4th at 12pm photo students and artists from around the world will sit down for a bite in unison and capture a shared experience at the exact same time. Take a photograph of yourself with your meal or just a still life of your meal and mail it back to me at [email protected]. These simultaneous still life's, snapshots – self-portraits of people and their foods – will then be posted online to share . Our aim is to inspire a feeling of community across geographic and cultural boundaries .
HW students used photographers Sophie Calle , Fabine Plangger and Justine Reyes as inspiration for this assignment
